Selamat datang! GAMELAN DIY is the personal project of Ethan Schwartz, a US citizen living in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. After completing the 2015-2016 Darmasiswa program, Ethan decided to enroll as a regular student at Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta (ISI) in the Karawitan program. This website will serve as a record of student activities at ISI, as well as providing resources for the international gamelan community.
The name of this website - GAMELAN DIY - refers to two things. First, traditional music and arts in the Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, the administrative region established in 1950 with the Kraton Ngayogyakarta at it's center. Second, the Do-It-Yourself nature of learning gamelan and living in Java as an independent international student.
